Healthy Food Shopping Guide

Conventional or Mainstream Market

Today's market is very different from the fresh food markets of the past. Today you will find 68-69% processed foods and many of those foods have fillers.

Add to that the degradation of our soils (mineral and vitamins) agricultural chemicals, that not only affect our vegetation, but our meat, and poultry.

The most important consideration in selecting food items is the integrity of the process, whole foods from organic sources is best obviously, however there are other high integrity options when what we want is not readily available.

In order, my produce choices are first, fresh organic, frozen organic, hydroponic, and my last choice is conventional. The only time we purchase fish is wild and from ice cold waters, turkey is occasional and from a wholesome wild farm.

Please click on any of the boxes below for a complete description of my shopping preferences. Not any one person has all the answers, andin making this list I keep in mind that our choices are often times limited. These lists are comprised from mainstream supermarkets, not natural food markets, so you will see options that are more realistic to mainstream.

The good news is most mainstream markets are including organic and high integrity choices today. Partly this is a result of many of us asking for healthier food, and buying the healthiest choices, and that becoming evident to food companies. Surprisingly, even 3 years ago our local chain market did not particularly have a health focus, yet today there are organic and healthy choices on every shelf! Mostly, we just need to look for them.

The options and choices below are totally subjective, it's what I do, how I decide, once you determine your own alkaline/acid goals and approach, have a handle on the tools, then you will make your decisions.

Our family approach at home (on a good, better, best alkaline scale), is mostly best. We do not however stress ourselves about ingredients when we are at someone's home, a party, or a restaurant. We make the choices we feel are best, or eat the food that's offered, and leave knowing there probably isn't any food that is more acidic than the stress we could have conjured up "stressing" about food/beverages we don't normally ingest.

Again, if you have to prioritize when to eat healthy, I choose dinner until bedtime as the most important time - go to bed digested and ready to move into your healing cycle.

Choose your food wisely, you are what you eat!

Notes:

*Potatos are the topic of conversation with everyone who is looking at acid/alkaline: potatoes are starchy, and by the very nature of starch, acidic at least post digestively, however red potatoes have the least amount of starch - also, baked potatoes filled with green veges (3 to 1) can be a good option because you are weighting the starch with lots of vegetables

Notes:

Vege Shredds is a brand name and one of the vegetable based cheeses that tastes similar to cheddar and jack blend, to transition you can begin mixing it in with your cheese, soon the whole family will enjoy it.

Dairy - Cows have a dual stomach/digestion which results in lactic acid, and we surely don't need lactic acid to add to our own acidity. Goats have a single dtomach/digestion, and while not optimal, a good option, i.e., goat cheese is becoming extremely popular because it is easier on the stomach.

Notes: To maximize our healing cycle and minimize our acidity, an easy small change is to make dinner the healthiest meal, i.e., we should go to bed fully digested, allowing our bodies to rest and regenerate. Drinking fresh lemon water in the evening hours is a good addition.
